Why do we look upwards or into the distance when trying to recall something, answer a difficult question or solve a puzzle?

Why do we look upwards or into the distance when trying to recall something, answer a difficult question or solve a puzzle?

I wouldn't say we look "upwards or into the distance" in such cases, but rather that we remove our attention from our immediate reality so that we can devote our energy to solve the problem.
